Friends is a virtual gold mine of one-off characters; from Brad Pitt to Julia Roberts, theres plenty to choose from, but I have decided to go for a character that didnt even get a name. True there are guest stars with more substantial roles, but the one that always stuck in my mind is Hugh Laurie. At the time of the appearance Hugh was certainly a well-known name in the UK, but he was a virtual unknown in the US, so a guest role on Friends was a very big deal for the future Doctor House. Laurie's role coincides with the London episodes of the show; as Rachel boards a plane to the city, she finds herself sat next to Laurie and its safe to say that Hugh didnt enjoy the company of his new neighbour. The scene in which Hughs character snaps at Rachel is not only funny, but also an important acknowledgment of what a lot of us were thinking at that point in time. While Rosss assertions that they were on a break were still funny, Rachels whining about the breakup was beginning to grow tiresome and it was about time that somebody said it- thank you Hugh.
