2. The Society

Tonally completely opposite from our last entry but equally hard doneby from Netflix, we’ve got mystery drama The Society. After returning from a postponed field trip, a group of teenagers discover all the adults from their town have vanished and it’s up to them to solve the mystery, re-establish society, and figure out how to manage, Lord of the Flies-style.

If you’re expecting things to go south pretty quickly, you’d be right. But there’s a fascinating level of nuance here, too.

The themes of growing up and adolescence are treated with an impressive amount of care, and a number of impressive performances from plenty of talented young actors, including Freaky’s Kathryn Newton, ensure the action stays engaging. While The Society actually was renewed for a second season after being a hit with critics and fans, Netflix reneged on this decision, citing pandemic-related production issues. This was particularly brutal for fans as there was an enormous cliffhanger ending that would never see a resolution.

The petition to renew this one has almost 150,000 signatures and its ending is surely a part of that.
