From gripping police procedurals to wacky mystery-thrillers, epic zombie horrors and subversive psychological dramas, the year has gotten off to an absolute flier on the small screen, promising some spectacular things going forward.

No matter what you're after, this list has you covered, whether you're hunting for a good laugh or an exhausting sob into your popcorn.

After almost two years of inconsistent output brought on by the pandemic, it sure is a relief to see so many great shows still being released. With that in mind, here are the 10 best that 2022 has produced so far.

10. The Responder

This six-part drama follows an urgent response officer called Chris (Martin Freeman) who must work six gruelling night shifts in Liverpool, an undertaking which throws his mental health and career into turmoil.

Anchored by a typically powerful performance from Freeman as a man out of luck, seemingly out of time, and desperate for release, The Responder is gritty and harrowingly dark in its depiction of crime and mental anguish, but isn't just shock for shock's sake.

With a stirring humanist edge and a strikingly authentic script from former officer Tony Schumacher, the crime-thriller is emotionally frightening, but also uses its characters to be genuinely mysterious.

Freeman is sure to be a major awards contender going forward, but he's just one part of a vital British drama we should be talking about for the rest of the year.
