6. The Innocent Man
Anyone looking for a unique twist on typical mystery will find a lot to love.
We might as well repeat that sentence for this entry, because the tale of ex-baseball player Ronald Keith Williamson's incarceration is intense. He was arrested and charged with the rape and murder of Debra Carter in 1988, then released from prison more than a decade later in 1999.
Based on the non-fiction book by writer John Grisham, The Innocent Man is an often-thought provoking snapshot look at how police corruption and the need to tag a felon can lead to disaster. In some respects, this is a commentary on how the entire law system is flawed, and it makes one feel for Williamson.
The Innocent Man might have been higher on the list had it not relied on an opening that makes it seem like HBO's next big series. That's a rare downside in a six-parter which gets one's brain ticking with a sense of cruel malpractice from police.
