8. Sofia Copolla Directing The Little Mermaid

Sofia Coppola has gone from being the worst thing in The Godfather Part III to one of Hollywood's most interesting independent filmmakers, with films like Lost In Translation, Marie Antoinette, and The Bling Ring under her belt. Now, she's stepping outside of her comfort zone a bit, and helming a live action adaptation of The Little Mermaid for Universal. Not much is known about the film yet, though it's expected to be a similar take to the Disney classic; following Ariel as she strikes a bargain to experience life on land as a human after falling in love. The film is being rewritten by Caroline Thompson, whose resume includes Edward Scissorhands, The Addams Family, and Corpse Bride.
