TV title sequences are a bit of a dying art form these days but thankfully there are a few shows out there that haven't abandoned this for a Lost-style logo. Penny Dreadful is one of the best and one of the most unsettling too. With a frenzied score and gorgeous imagery it is able to capture glimpses of horror from the show, setting the scene for the story to come without ever straying over-the-top. We catch the briefest look at the fangs of a wolf, the cutting of human flesh, all motifs in the show. What is far worse are the creatures the title sequence employs to creep out the audience. The insects are a nasty touch, crawling over what we assume is sewn up flesh. It creates a sense of death and decay. Shadows and scorpions leap out of the shadows, long spindly legs clamber over the television screen, bats fill the sky and a snake slithers over a chair - your chair? It is enough to put anyone on edge. The idea of broken and fallen crosses conjures the dread of evil triumphing over good and blood pouring from a tea cup adds a chilling finishing touch. The title sequence for Penny Dreadful perfectly captures the Gothic horror of the show, drawing audiences into the nightmarish world that we encounter in Victorian London.
