10 Cult TV Shows Your Friends Bang On About (But You've Not Seen Yet)
6. Community
Much like Chuck, Community was a show that fought against cancellation from the beginning, and a show built on the chemistry of a strong cast.
As ratings gradually fell, so did NBC's patience and despite protestation from its loyal audience, Community was cancelled after five seasons. The fanbase was united by its own rallying cry, 'six seasons and a movie', a phrase coined on the show and turned into a Twitter hashtag used to try and save the show. This movement proved Community's cult following, which was enough for Yahoo to commission a sixth season, and a film is still occasionally being talked about (if only to say it might happen, just not now).
Community follows Jeff Winger, a quick-talking lawyer suspended from his firm when they find out his bachelor's degree is fake. He is left with no choice but to enrol in community college to earn a legitimate degree and get back to his old life.
A community college might not sound like an exciting setting, but the show's strength came from skewing typical comedy tropes and looking at real issues and how they profoundly affected its characters.
Community was not afraid to take risks and embrace ambitious concepts; one episode was filmed entirely with puppets while another paid homage to the 1980s GI Joe cartoons by being entirely animated. It may have run out of steam by its conclusion but Community was definitely a fun ride along the way.
