10 Incredibly Dark British TV Comedy Series You NEED To Watch
10. The League of Gentlemen
It would be an actual crime to not include this in a list of essential black comedies from the United Kingdom, so here we are singing its praises once again.
First broadcast at the tail-end of the nineties, The League of Gentleman pushed the sketch-show format into new and disturbing territory by giving its cast of oddball characters a serialised arc which their numerous paths cross-over in strange and exciting ways. This sense of cohesion gave its characters added depth, and made the setting of Roystone Vasey feel like a living, breathing community - one that just happened to be home to all manner of perverts and murderers.
Across its four series, the show pushed the boundaries of taste to its limits and its impact on British comedy can still be felt to this day, with the likes of Little Britain, The Mighty Boosh, and Crazyhead owing more than a pound of flesh to this much-loved cult classic.
Endlessly re-watchable and highly quotable, the rabid fanbase for this show is still going strong and there are even talks of yet another revival series in the works which is a real testament to its enduring popularity.
