10 More Overlooked Buffy The Vampire Slayer Episodes That Are Secretly Classics
10. Fear, Itself (Season 4, Episode 4)
A fan-favourite for all the right reasons, 'Fear, Itself' is one of the show's better Halloween episodes that strides the line perfectly between outright horror and well-earned belly laughs.
It sees Buffy, Xander, Oz, and Willow attend a fraternity's haunted house party, but what was intended to be a good-natured spookfest soon turns sour when the decorative sigils on the walls conjure up all manner of evil forces. The group is then attacked by bats, tarantulas, and very real skeletons, and upon trying to escape, they find that all of the known exits have been sealed up.
Giles and Anya arrive to try and rescue them from the house's confines, but a much greater and more powerful evil is lurking within its walls, one that is waiting to emerge and kill everyone inside.
Perhaps the reason for this episode's lingering popularity is in its goofy humour and well-natured scares, which make it an ideal viewing experience at Halloween time. The subsequent reveal of the episode's major antagonist only being mere inches tall is also the perfect cherry on the cake for what is an immensely enjoyable episode.
Season four certainly has its ups and downs, but 'Fear, Itself' is one of its finest episodes.
