Its the very first scene of the first part of this television miniseries (not a movie, although the two parts have often been shown edited together to give the illusion of being one single film) that were bringing up here: the first appearance of Pennywise, The Dancing Clown. Coulrophobia is a serious issue for many people in Western culture, and in the interests of transparency, we must issue a warning to those of you reading this who are unfamiliar with Pennywise if youre going to watch the following clip, we cant be held responsible for your nightmares.Played by the amazing Tim Curry, Pennywise would be revealed later on in the story to be the default mode of an ancient, demonic force that lived in the caves beneath the town of Derry. Able to take the form of its victims worst fears, apparently It, as the heroes of the story christen the monster, found that a fear of clowns was a baseline fear in humans, and tended to take the form of Pennywise as a lowest common denominator shape because it affected multiple people. Translation: Its a killer clown. Yes, we know that they found that Its true form was a giant glowing spider-thing, but thats just bad special effects. Pennywise, on the other hand, was terrifying even if you didnt hate clowns. Without Pennywise, It is just a chip shop episode of Star Trek.
