Pre-title sequences can often be the most overlooked part of a Doctor Whoepisode. Most reviewers and fans focus on the story of the episode, with a particular focus on the climax, which is arguably the most important part of the story. However, the pre-credit sequences serve a vital purpose, as they set up the rest of the episode and allow the writer to draw the viewer in. As iconic as Doctor Who's credit sequence is, it would not be quite as great without a fantastic hook preceding it. Creating a memorable pre-credit sequence is a balancing act. The scene must simultaneously draw in the viewer without creating a situation that could be unfeasible for the characters to get out of following the opening credits. To be too shocking would risk setting up the viewer for disappointment, while being too boring would fail to draw the viewer in. These scenes are the ones that had enough intensity, mystery and fun to get, and subsequently keep, our attention. They managed to provide the viewer with enough incentive to continue with the episode. Then again, Steven Moffat could release an entire series of Peter Capaldi picking his toenails and Whovians would still watch it, but that's beside the point.
