10. Melisandre Gives Birth To A Shadow Assassin (Season 2, Episode 4)

During the War of the Five Kings, Stannis Baratheon quarrels with his brother Renly. Both men are after the Iron Throne, and neither is willing to bend the knee to the other. But rather than facing his brother in battle, Stannis utilises the skills of Melisandre, the Red Witch from Asshai.

After receiving instructions from Stannis, Davos takes Melisandre along the coastline of the Stormlands, and the two of them enter a cove. Here, Melisandre takes off her clothes, revealing her pregnant stomach. But rather than giving birth to a human child, she pushes out a demonic shadow, which proceeds to kill Renly in the next episode.

Davos’s look of terror pretty much sums up this moment – it’s like something from a body horror movie. Melisandre’s desperate moans, the screeches of the shadow, and the creepy music come together to create one of the most memorable – and shocking – moments in the show.

Though there are several other unpleasant scenes involving the Red Witch, this one is the most disturbing.
