10 Once Great TV Shows That Became Laughing Stocks

9. Dexter

While some shows end up parodying themselves by remaining on-air for too long and others bow out on an bum note that harms their legacy, Dexter falls somewhere in between.

A show that gripped audiences like nothing before it, the crime drama received critical acclaim in the beginning, with fans and critics responding incredibly well to protagonist Dexter Morgan, his unorthodox method of justice and the exceptionally storylined plots - particularly the ones that showcased his own character arc. But the longer it went on, the immensely high standard it had set for itself began to slip.

Though it would still produce some absolute gems throughout its run - experiencing impressive renaissances in its fourth and seventh seasons - it struggled to maintain the standard, as the great would always give way to something poor. And, as a result, the show became hampered by uninteresting villains and awkward plot developments, with each low point being significantly lower than its predecessor.

It wasn't compelling anymore, just baffling. That psychological thriller-esque sheen was nowhere to be found and the creative decisions began to make less and less sense - so it's hardly surprising that final season (and series finale) left fans with a very bad taste in their mouths.

A dark fate for a show that started with so much promise.
