Why She Was Hated

Anyone who was introduced as in any way different to Meredith Grey was always going to cause a little friction. And unfortunately for April Kepner, she came into season 6 as a super annoying intern whose devout religious commitment was played as something of a joke.

Considering the show is a tornado of sexual activity and impropriety, that makes a lot of sense, but it was always a little cruel.

But Then...

From annoying intern, April went on to be a very gifted doctor whose sharper edges were softened dramatically. Her "awakening" also made her a more sympathetic character when she got together with Jackson and for a while she looked like less of a disaster.

But then everything went wrong with the death of her child and she became even more sympathetic again. When her and Jackson's relationship fell down, we saw more complexity (and even a party girl spirit emerging for a while) and then as she refound her faith, we legitimately cheered her on.
