Hosted: March 10, 2001 It seems that any former cast member who ultimately reached even a modicum of success after leaving SNL has returned to host. From the most successful ones- like Bill Murray, Will Ferrell, and Mike Myers- to the ones who may have seen their best days at 30 Rockefeller- like Molly Shannon, Dana Carvey, and the late-Chris Farley- a former cast member can almost guarantee that if they still have name-recognition, they'll be invited back to host. But how many former writers can say that? Conan O'Brien is one, and his hosting gig in 2001 was a successful one, with sketches "The Molecular Man" and his impression of "Right Said Fred" standing out as high points. However, an eventual turn for the former host of NBC's Tonight Show will probably never happen, after the fallout from NBC forcing O'Brien from the Tonight Show desk in favor of former host Jay Leno. There is still a lot of bad blood between both parties, but an invitation to Conan to come back to his first NBC home might be enough to quell the feud. Of course, Conan is currently hosting a new talk show on TBS, so timing would be a huge factor in getting him back to Saturday Night Live. But what a story it would make for both sides.
