The next big event in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is the release of Jessica Jones on Netflix on 20th November. The 13-episode season is part of the Netflix and Marvel 5-series agreement which has already brought us Daredevil. Jessica Jones will be followed by Luke Cage, Iron Fist and eventually The Defenders, which will unite the four heroes for an entire season. There was some surprise expressed at the announcement of Jessica Jones as a title character. After all, she's never been a major player in the Marvel universe. Despite possessing superpowers and having, earlier in life, fought crime as the superhero Jewel, Jones primarily works as a private investigator. The character really only gained traction as a member of the New Avengers, where she was an ally to popular Marvel comics (and Cinematic Universe) characters like Captain America. The Jessica Jones TV show looks set to skip the superhero phase and follow Jones' work as a P.I. in New York's Hell's Kitchen, where she will be dealing with some of the city's most dangerous elements. The character will be wrestling with her heroic past, the awful way it ended and the damage that has done to her psyche...all while drinking and fighting her way around the city. Trailers indicate it'll be dark, moody and exceptionally violent...
