The Jessica Jones mythology is one of the darkest of the many unsettling backstories given to Marvel characters. Her family died when she was young and she was largely raised in an orphanage. Her relationships with men are complex and sexually charged in a way we rarely see in comics. But most challenging is her victimisation at the hands of Kilgrave. Using his mind manipulation powers, he exploits Jessica physically, emotionally and sexually to such an extent that she gives up her superhero life. If the show is able to successfully tell a story of a woman recovering from abuse, it'll be doing something quite powerful.
