10 Secrets Of The Batcave Explained

9. The Giant Penny

Many may presume that the giant penny that adorns the Batcave is a keepsake from a battle with Two-Face. Well, it kinda is, but kinda isn't.

Originally, this massive Lincoln coin was a trophy Batman took from an encounter with the shoddy Penny Plunderers gang back in 1947's World's Finest Comics #30. Headed up by Joe Coyne, this roguish team had a penchant for pennies and penny-based crimes.

Logic would suggest it might be more prosperous to aim for giant hauls of cash, yet the Penny Plunderers would rather pull off a score consisting of a massive bag of pennies - or in this case, one giant penny coin.

After defeating Coyne and his Penny Plunderers, Batman would take the huge penny coin as his own personal prize.

Where does Two-Face come into this, then? Well, a more recent rectcon completely erased the Penny Plunderers, instead having the gargantuan Lincoln coin be a weapon of choice that Two-Face once used to attack Batman with.

That plan would go wrong, Bats would win out, and the Batcave received the coin as a new trophy.
