5. Two Pints Of Lager And A Packet Of Crisps (2003-2011)
From the lumpen title to the mad-for-it theme tune, Two Pints lurched through Threes schedules like a zombified Gallagher brother. In both form and content, it was about ten years out of date. Quick tip- if youre going to write a sitcom about twentysomethings, it would probably be helpful to avoid the formula of every other crappy studio comedy from the last half century, i.e. characters bellowing one liners at each other, eruptions of canned laughter underscoring their every moronic Northernism. The premise of the show? Hard to say, since by series three it felt like it had been with us since the Reformation, but going to the pub and nookie were standard plot elements. Thats what young folk do, int it? Although the cast here only just resembled young folk. There was Ralf Little, previously the silent one in The Royle Family, justifying that earlier creative decision. Sparking off him was Will Mellor, who has always and will always look like that. Two rubbish girls from Hollyoaks and Sheridan Smith- who actually managed to build a career after this- rounded out the forgettable fivesome. It lumbered on till 2011, by which time Him & Her had demonstrated the correct way to do this sort of thing. The tragedy is that not one of Two Pints millions of viewers can remember a single joke from seven infuriatingly blokey series.
