This performance here makes it very difficult for me to defend this show against its critics, but honestly, it truly is one of the greatest TV shows on television at the moment. You just have to pretend this musical performance never ever happened. This is perhaps the only Glee cover where I could accept someone saying it actually ruined the original version. Though I have never been a fan of the original song by Rock band Van Halen, Glee managed to turn a rock classic into a number that would have even had been cut from the High School Musical films for being too cheesy. Just look at the Glee cast in this number... look at their faces... too much cheese to even bare. How they managed to get through this performance without either throwing up with embarrassment or killing themselves laughing is a mystery- and for this they deserves all the awards (I wish someone would give Lea Michele a legitimate award already, I really really do). This episode from the much loved believe it or not first half of season 1 was the first episode of Glee I ever watched, and because of this number and this song (plus the Lily Allen song in the same episode) I didn't watch another episode for almost an entire year after this because I hated it so much. Thankfully, when I convinced myself to give some other episodes a try I really really was blown away. Just start with the pilot and when this episode comes around bare in mind that the episode which follows this one is one of Glee's all time best with it's all time greatest solo performance that features on the top spot of my all time greatest Glee moments.
