One of the more controversial storylines of The X-Files was the pregnancy of Dana Scully and the birth of son William. It took the series from "will they or won't they?" to "did they or didn't they?" and, when religious elements were introduced that had people calling her "the Virgin Scully" it seemed as if the show had reached a point of self-parody. Things weren't exactly helped when William appeared to have alien powers, though the fan base could take some consolation in knowing that Mulder and Scully were finally together, and that, yes, he was the father. However, introducing a baby so late in the game is almost always a ploy for ratings, and by the time the second feature film came around in 2008, William was but a brief mention. Whether or not fans of the series remain interested in the William storyline, however, it seems likely that there will be some time spent on it. Carter has been quoted as saying that "you can't avoid" dealing with the son of Mulder and Scully.
