Whilst the procedural thing is a bit disappointing, CBS have totally nailed the casting of its title character. This Kara Zor-El is a bolshy 24-year-old, adopting the less conspicuous surname Danvers from the family who adopted her when she showed up on Earth, who previously concealed her superpowers until she used them during an unexpected disaster, which sounds exciting. Amongst those on the shortlist to play Supergirl were Gemma Atkinson from Hollyoaks and lad's mag fame, and Claire Holt who starred in Mean Girls 2, so thank your lucky stars that the plum role ended up in the lap of Melissa Benoist instead, who's probably best known for playing Marley in the fourth and fifth seasons of Glee. But she's also shown up in more reputable dramas like The Good Wife, Homeland and Law & Order, and had a supporting role in award-winning indie drama Whiplash (alongside Miles Teller, who's about to have his own superhero leading role in The Fantastic Four). She's actually the right age for Kara, is suitably charming, and that blonde dye job worked out okay.
