10 Times TV Shows 'Did Right By The Fans' (And Pissed Everyone Off)

8. A Rude Awakening - Big Mouth

Debuting on Netflix in 2017, Big Mouth is an animated sitcom set in a high school which tracks the lives of a bunch of teenagers going through puberty.

Oh, and some of them have these weird, horny guardian angel-type things called “hormone monsters” telling them what to do. That’s quite an important detail.

As it’s a show about all the earthly delights of being young, Big Mouth got pretty lewd in its first few seasons. Fans loved this approach, especially in contrast to its brightly-coloured kids show aesthetic, so the writers doubled down on this approach for subsequent seasons.

The show, which is on the verge of its eighth season, got more and more X-rated the longer it was on, which ended up distracting from a lot of the character growth and plot that had made it so popular.

You can’t just fill a show full of dirty jokes and expect that to replace the basic tenets of storytelling. Well, you can, but it isn’t advisable.

Big Mouth was a classic victim of its own success and, in an ironic twist, actually lost a lot of its edge the filthier it got.
