10 Ways American Dad Is Better Than Family Guy

By Fred McNamara /

9. Stronger Family Conflict

This diversity in family personalities very often leads to open conflict within the Smiths, such as the storyline where Hayley elopes with Jeff. Not that there isn€™t conflict to be found in Family Guy, just look at Stewie€™s constant attempts to kill Lois. But while the above example gave way to many a humorous episode in Family Guy€™s early run, there€™s no real logical explanation behind Stewie€™s murderous tendencies. Stewie even forgets his initial purpose for being on the show in the season five opener €˜Stewie Loves Lois€™. The conflict found in American Dad feels more natural, as if it were a real family against each other. Naturally, it€™s not without its exaggeration. €˜Home Wrecker€™ sees Stan and Francine literally split the house in half, each half decorated in their wanted styles. Ultimately, they can€™t bear to be apart from each other, tearing down both a physical and metaphorical wall in order to be together.
