10 Ways New Star Trek TV Series Could Go

By Tom Baker /

3. A Mini-Series

How exactly would those old movie concepts work as a TV show, though? Well, most of the ideas floated for how to bring Star Trek back to the small screen so far have been about ongoing series, just like every other Trek show has been. But it might be more prudent to go down another route, and see how that works out. Say, the prestige mini-series route, much like fellow cult classic sci-fi show Battlestar Galactica tried a few years ago. And that worked pretty darn well, the highly-acclaimed three-hour mini-series aired on the SyFy channel (back when it had a marginally less silly name) earning enough critical acclaim and viewers that they commissioned a proper ongoing series. Which tanked a little towards the end but still provided three solid, mature and engaging seasons of science fiction telly. The stories of The God Thing and Planet Of The Titans lend themselves better to a self-contained structure, but could easily be used to springboard to a full series. Similarly, using a mini-series as a testing ground for new ideas could work for any of these concepts. Plus then, if Paramount get cold feet, at least Trekkies have a complete box set to fawn over and think about would could have been.
