2. Tasha Yar Continued...

There is one universal Star Trek truth. The way Tasha Yar was killed off in The Next Generation sucked. Not only was she gone far too soon, but the completely inane cause of death left fans open-mouthed and staring at their screens. Then, Yesterday's Enterprise came along and gave her the final blaze of glory she deserved.

Yesterday's Enterprise is a fantastic timey-wimey story in its own right. A temporal rift sees the USS Enterprise-C emerge in the same timeframe as USS Enterprise-D, pulling them out of a crucial battle in defence of a Klingon outpost twenty-two years prior. As a result, the timeline changes, and we see an Enterprise-D that's at war with the Klingons...and has Tasha Yar back on the bridge.

Not only did Yar's original departure leave a sour taste in the mouth, but it's fair to say she was sorely underutilised throughout Season 1. But Yesterday's Enterprise finally gives us the Tasha Yar we'd wanted all along. She's resilient, perceptive, decisive, emotionally compelling and relatable. It was as if they'd finally realised what the character should have been...two seasons too late.

And Yar's return has lasting consequences. When she discovers that her counterpart suffered a senseless death, Yar volunteers to join the Enterprise-C as it returns through the rift to correct the timeline, despite knowing they're outgunned by the Romulan warbirds that await. But she's determined to make her death mean something this time, rather than simply disappearing again when the timeline reverts.

It spawns another epic storyline, her unexpected survival causing ripples throughout the Romulan Empire. But more importantly, it felt like the writers had finally righted a wrong that we'd all been feeling since Tasha Yar fell to a blob.
