What better mentor could the motley crew of the USS Protostar ask for than Kathryn Janeway? Even a holographic version.

Star Trek: Prodigy tells the story of a bunch of misfit kids, brought together in their bid to use the abandoned vessel as an escape to new worlds and civilisations. Just as they're trying to come to grips with the Protostar, they unwittingly bring a holographic advisor online in the unexpected form of Janeway.

Assuming the young, inexperienced gang are cadets, she takes it upon herself to mentor them, Starfleet style. From teaching them the fundamentals to more or less forcing them to lead away missions in the name of exploration, she starts to shape their journey and nurture their dreams of joining Starfleet.

Of course, even Hologram Janeway wouldn't be complete without wise words and compassionate advice. She encourages them to work together despite their differences, assuring them they have potential. She looks out for each one of them, saving their lives on multiple occasions. And in the end, she sacrifices herself to protect the young crew she's grown so fond of.

Captain Janeway once said:

There are three things to remember about being a starship captain. Keep your shirt tucked in, go down with the ship, and never abandon a member of your crew.

Hologram Janeway not only lived by those words in every sense, but she also passed that legacy on to the next generation.
