The real problem with Homer Simpson as a parent is exactly the same thing that makes him a successful cartoon character. He's an idiot who never learns from his mistakes and has no sense of consistency in terms of how he treats his family. Which only makes sense for this type of show -- it couldn't possibly have been on the air for twenty five years if the characters actually grew and changed. One day he's an abusive, negligent alcoholic, the next he's a caring, sensitive father, depending on what is needed for that particular episode. He's a man who routinely throttles his own son and is often ridiculously selfish, putting his own desires ahead of the needs of his small children -- who really cares if every once in a while he does a good deed, only to forget the lessons he's learned by the time the next episode airs? That doesn't change his actions from the other 98% of the time, does it? Honestly, we're just shocked that CPS has never gotten involved, investigating Homer for abuse, Marge for enabling his behavior, and taking Bart, Lisa, Maggie, and Santa's Little Helper away.
