100 Reasons Why Lost is The Greatest TV Show Of All Time

By Luke Stevenson /

40. Desmond Hume

One of the more unexpected characters (did anyone really expect a belligerent Scotsman to be in the hatch?), Desmond became loved due to his accent, his famous line, his special powers and, above all else, romantic ties to Penny. Penny and Desmond were possibly the best loved couple in the show due to their sheer, unrelenting will to lose one another. Their many flashbacks together, as well as on and off Island rendezvous€™ made for brilliant romantic drama. On top of this; Desmond became the spiritual guide of the group as his unique connections to electromagnetism allowed him to be aware of the alternate universe and, through that, he brought them all together again. Which is something he will always be loved for.

39. The Hatch Is Blown Open

After so much build up, the explosion of the hatch was a monumental moment in the Lost journey. The enigmatic final image of them looking down the hatch is one of the best final episode images; not only was it a brilliant finale to an incredible first season, but the implications of the hatch was huge as it would bring Lost away from just the first group of survivors on the beach, there was much more to be explored.

38. The Direction

One of the shows best technical feature was the men behind the cameras. Never just cashing it in they used kinetic, sweeping direction to give us an intense immersion in to the world of the Island whilst giving just majesty to the Islands reveals and mystery. The episodes always had a clear distinction between the on Island and off Island activity which helped make each narrative feel distinct and purposeful. The sweeping use of the Islands scope and beauty, the intense focus on the characters and the seamlessness of how the stories were told helped make Lost the greatest TV show ever.

37. Jin and Sun

From uneasy beginnings to a collectively heart breaking conclusion; Sun and Jin€™s journey together was one of the more complete as they managed to rediscover a love on the island which seemed all but lost when they got there. It was a simple emotional journey but one that gave the best inclination in to the purpose of the people on the island and the overall journey of the show; sure they got a bit boring when they were apart and Sun started using the word €˜Jin€™ as a full stop, but their journey together was one beautifully told and fittingly concluded.

36. S6E01&02: LAX

One of the things that makes Lost brilliant is its power of understatement; after the very literally explosive finale to Season 5 fans expected more than just fireworks in the season opener. However in probably the most low key, and brilliant, of the show€™s opening scenes it quite simply takes us back to the plane just before Oceanic 815 crashes; only this time it doesn€™t crash....And the island is on the bottom of the ocean. WHAT?! Oh wait; they are still on the island, so...There are flash sideways? WHAT?! Something that gave the show a different type of tone by focusing on the what could have happened, whilst the narrative on the island still progressed with things like The Man In Black actually being the Smoke Monster. This is one of the strongest episodes simply by how it expertly lowers the energy from the season five finale; and sets Lost€™s final season in a clear direction.

35. Jack and Locke

The men of science and faith; these two€™s kept the show powering along at a dramatic high. Their clashes were a constant source of excitement and these two together helped drive the show forward through the more explosive plot points. Despite their animosity; their emotional connection in the €˜alternate universe€™ felt right as these two men pushed one another to be the men they became and was one of the more interesting relationships the show had.

34. Down To Your Own Interpretations

One of the most polarising things about Lost is how it doesn€™t give definitive answers; however if they had people would then have complained about the nature of the answers, or that they didn€™t match their own. Lost gave itself direction to bring its own conclusions, however through this it opens up the doors to many interpretations for people to have, be it religious, emotional, scientific, Lost€™s ability to provoke thought and debate is one of its strongest tools. Taking that away would only have made the show poorer for it.

33. Sun and Jin Reunited

After so many years apart, and so many questions from Sun asking about where Jin was, this was one of the sweetest and most wished for moments in Season 6 of Lost, as was Jin€™s assurance that they would never be apart again...Something which he proved quite soon afterwards.

32. Sun and Jin€™s Death

Widely regarded as one of the more brutal deaths in Lost, but equally revered in its beauty and how it united audiences against the MIB; this scene, if it€™s possible, best encapsulated their love for one another.

31. Michael Emerson

Michael Emerson is a truly tremendous actor; his role in Lost is the reason that this can be said without any need for hyperbole. From his transition from the lying €˜Henry Gale€™, to the calculating Ben, to the emotionally ruined and desperate Ben that we see at the end; he explored a range of evil to a range of emotionally needy and a character you genuinely root for. This is a statement in itself, considering all the evil he committed.
