Based on the late 1990s British TV show The Grimleys, and featuring the ineffable talents of Randy Quaid, a young Michael Cera and Carol Kane, The Grubbs was produced without Granada's input and naturally missed the point of what had made The Grimleys successful to the point that it was condemned in early reviews as "the worst sitcom ever produced," which is saying a lot for a country that continues to air 2 Broke Girls without censorship. The show followed Mike Grubb (Quaid) - a happy man thanks to his very low standards, and his wife, Rosie, who loves him. As something of a forerunner for Shameless, Mike was to be shown receiving a disability check each month as the result of a career-ending, industrial "accident," with his son Jimmy seemingly happy to follow in his father's underachieving footsteps, and one other son, Mitch (Cera,) hoping for a brighter future thanks to his new teacher. Somewhat hilariously, the show was scrapped just two days before its planned debut, with the official reasoning being that it "failed to live up to its creative potential" and the originally made 8 episodes never seeing the light of day.
