A controversial choice perhaps, with the lack of definitive clarification over how Sherlock survived the fall at the end of The Reichenbach Fall. Given the sheer ingenuity of this series, was anything ever going to meet the expectations we all had in that long wait between the second and third series? Series three opener The Empty Hearse does present three options as to how Sherlock ultimately survived and the third is the most plausible; he used Molly to provide a fake body, his homeless network to engineer fake crowds and distractions and a bungee cord to survive the plummet. It's all rather...simple in a Sherlock-kind of way. But of course, it's not how he faked his death but the why (to allow him to dismantle Moriaty's criminal network) and how people react to his return. In this, his resurrection is utterly brilliant. Impersonating a waiter to surprise Watson is one of the funniest moments in recent years and lead to a further series of events resulting in a frustrated Watson hitting him. It's over the top yet completely believable at the same time and made for some amazing television, showing exactly how to bring a character back from the dead with style and flair.
