4. Rita - Dexter

The main man's equally badass partner and, later on at least, wife, Rita's departure from Dexter has garnered a reputation for being one of TV's more shocking moments, however it was really something audiences could have very easily seen coming.

Initially being seen as nothing more than a ruse and a way of appearing as a normal human being, Dexter's growing fondness and later affection is the biggest tell-tale sign going that, the longer she goes on, the more in danger Rita truly was.

On the eve of the season four finale 'The Getaway', Dexter producers had even gone out of their way to tell the media that there was a season-defining twist ending, which led to speculation aplenty that it could be curtains for Rita. NDAs were signed amongst the show's staff, conspiracy theories were shared around and there were even reports that, the longer the season went on, the more natural Rita's death began to feel.

Nevertheless, when Rita's death did indeed come at the hands of Arthur, it was still a truly harrowing moment for viewers. In a cruel twist of fate, it's revealed that Rita hadn't left town, like Dexter had instructed her to, and was instead back at home after forgetting her ID. By the time Dexter comes home, the audience already knows what has happened, however the sight is still one that never fails to tug at the heart strings.
