There have been 181 episodes of American Dad! spread over 11 separate series since the brainchild of Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman was first broadcast on May 1, 2005, to complement its sister shows Family Guy and latterly The Cleveland Show. Slightly more realist and less-focused on satirising popular culture than its sister shows, American Dad! centres on the everyday-lives of CIA Agent Stan Smith, his housewife Francine, their college-aged daughter Hayley, their teenage son Steve - as well as Hayley's boyfriend Jeff Fischer, a resident alien named Roger and their talking pet goldfish Klaus. With Stan and his family residents of Cherry Street, Langley Falls, Virginia, they are portrayed as an archetypal suburban American family and the majority of the episodes aim to relate to everyday problems that would affect a standard US household - although naturally they are taken to a satirical extreme. The fact that so many people are able to relate to the backstory of the characters makes American Dad! extremely watchable - and highly addictive. MacFarlane himself has said that President George W. Bush's election in 2000 prompted the creation of the show - and CIA Agent Stan epitomises everything the Bush administration was perceived to have stood for by its critics during its time in office. Thankfully, the humour has transcended into Barack Obama's time in The Whitehouse and looks set to continue for a 12th series later in 2015.
