13 Most Anticipated Upcoming New Comic Book TV Shows
The small screen comic book boom is showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
Like their big screen counterparts, comic book TV shows are increasingly big business. Much like Marvel and DC have their Cinematic/Extended Universes, so too has the small screen replicated this practice.
The MCU extends into ABC's Agents of Shield and the Netflix series, while The CW's Arrowverse was around long before Batman was fighting Superman. Even outside of those two behemoths, comics represent major money and (occasionally) high quality on television, as evidenced by The Walking Dead becoming one of the most watched series of the decade.
Because of that - and since we're living in an era of more TV shows than ever before - it's not a trend showing any signs of slowing down. Indeed, as the success of shows like TWD, Preacher, and Daredevil continues, we're only going to get more of them.
Whether it's part of the MCU, the DC universe, or completely outside of those titans, there's a lot for comic book fans to look forward to.
13. The Umbrella Academy
One of the most recently announced shows on this list, it was revealed earlier this month that Netflix would be adapting the acclaimed comic book series, which comes from My Chemical Romance's Gerard Way, with illustrations from Gabriel Bá. The Eisner Winning series is centred around an alt-history, where 43 superpowered children are born by random women. Only seven of these 43 survive, and end up being adapted by a renowned scientist.
Following the outline of the first comic run, Apocalypse Suite, the live-action series will follow the dysfunctional family of superheroes - The Monocle, Spaceboy, The Kraken, The Rumor, The Séance, Number Five, The Horror and The White Violin, who together form The Umbrella Academy - as they attempt to work together to solve the mystery of their father's murder.
It was originally conceived as a movie back in 2011, before that turned into a TV series in 2015, and now Netflix have picked it up for a 10 episode order, set to air in 2018. Steve Blackman, writer/producer on Fargo, is serving as showrunner. Netflix should be a great home for the series, especially if they can bring to life the comic's visual style, and it should provide a nice twist on the genre.
