Why It Might Be Cancelled

Fox might not even have all that much of a choice, with the series' co-star Gillian Anderson saying she won't be back regardless. They tried it without one of Mulder and Scully once before and it didn't work, and it's hard to imagine anything being different now. That's especially the case given the massive fall in ratings from the first revival season, with novelty and curiosity wearing off to the tune of a 69% drop.

Why It Might Not

Because it's The X-Files, which is still one of the biggest IPs Fox owns. Chris Carter would no doubt like to continue it too, even without (though preferably with) Anderson, although maybe a spin-off would be more likely than another season.
