15. Mary & George

To say that Mary & George plays fast and loose with the facts of its historical setting would be a massive understatement, but such is its charm and the primary reason it works so well.

Based on the non-fiction book "The King's Assassin" by Benjamin Wooley, Mary & George concerns scheming matriarch Mary Villiers (a ferocious, scenery-chewing Julianne Moore) who uses her son George (Nicholas Galitzine) to wriggle into favour with the troubled King James VI (Tony Curran).

It's a delightfully twisted tale of political intrigue, though that's merely the tip of the iceberg, because D.C. Moore's drama is also a relentless feast for the senses. Foul-mouthed, sex-filled and violent, the show pushes the boundaries of taste at every turn, but emerges all the more entertaining for it.

Mary & George is a wild, mature ride, one that slips up from time to time as its twists its characters into knots, but from its performances to its energetic production, it'll keep you hooked from its mysterious first frame to its brutal last.
