16 Upcoming Netflix Original Series To Be Excited About (That Aren't Marvel)
There's more coming to Netflix than Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Netflix and Marvel have proved to be a match made in TV heaven. So far the deal between the streaming service and comic giants has yeilded two great seasons of Daredevil, and a brilliant one of Jessica Jones.
There's plenty reason to be excited for the future as well, with Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, and The Punisher all to come (alongside more Jones and, probably, another season of Daredevil). They've took the MCU into places it can't go on the big screen, and with fantastic results.
But there's way more to Netflix than just Marvel.
From House of Cards and Orange is the new Black to more recent hits like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Lady Dynamite, they've proven adept at a wide variety of genres, and at this point it's hardly even worth mentioning their impact on TV as a whole. Their successes means that they're one of the places who'll take risks, whether it's on an original show that wouldn't get made elsewhere, or saving one from fading out of existence.
Not everything is a hit, but their success rate is better than most. And while the immediate future is in part centred around the big players and Marvel series, there's a wealth of new series to get excited about as well.
16. Easy
Actor/director/writer/Chief of Mumblecore, Joe Swanberg is making the transition from movies to TV, with an anthology series picked up by Netflix.
Swanberg has experience with Netflix, having worked on the Judd Apatow series Love, and now he's bringing his partiuclar brand of micro-budget, improvised humour to the streaming service.
The eight episode series (which there isn't a timeframe for just yet) will examine the lives of various people in Chicago, their relationships, and daily encounters with love, sex, technology, and culture. The idea of this being an anthology makes it a bit more interesting than if it was just a regular series, and it's also got an excellent cast, including Orlando Bloom, Malin Akerman, Jake Johnson, Aya Cash, Dave Franco, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
