Another one of Lynch's favourite oldies was Double Indemnity, the 1944 Noir classic that's still to this day considered one of the greatest works of American 20th Century cinema. A story or deceit and misdirection centred around insurance agent Walter Neff.

In Episode 6 as a precursor to the mill being burned down, Catherine is visited by an insurance agent needing to obtain her signature for the new policy. That insurance agent's name? Walter Neff.
