9. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

There are plenty of folk out there who are a bit tired of all these new Game of Thrones spin-offs, so it came as a bit of a shock when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms came and offered audiences something genuinely new.

Yes, we're still in Westeros; in the background, political upheaval lurks like a viper, waiting to strike, and the violence that punctuates every other episode is characteristically bloody for the franchise we know and love.

This time, though, the joy is in the fact this particular version of Westeros isn't as epic and grand as what came before, instead focussing its story on a kindly knight and his young squire, both of whom just want to compete in jousting tournaments and live a little.

There are some lingering mysteries to unpack involving the squire's history - this is still Game of Thrones - but A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms works because it feels so removed and unique to what came before; small-scale and movingly character-driven.
