British writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge's popularity has sky-rocketed due to her recent show-runner role with the off-kilter Killing Eve, plus landing a stint as the first female James Bond writer hasn't hurt either.

Yet, her peak work still remains her first effort, this dark (but hilarious) character study centred around the deeply flawed unnamed protagonist in Fleabag.

Played with honest likeability by Waller herself, the show delves into dire dramatic places without ever being heavily morose, it's emotionally moving without being cloying, and it can be clever (e.g. fourth wall breaking) without ever being smug. Her laugh-out-loud sense of humour and penchant for killer punchlines certainly helps as well.

It’s a layered and witty examination of a self-destructive character, with it never apologising for her behaviour but it never needs to...she's as deeply flawed and muddled as most human beings are, and just as relatable.
