12. True Detective

A huge hit in 2014, thanks in large to it starring Matthew McConaughey just after his big Oscar win, True Detective is pure pulp fiction with an aesthetic usually reserved for the big screen. Rarely for a TV show, the direction was often the focus of critical analysis such was the excellent work of Cary Fukunaga who was previously known for his excellent adaptation of Jane Eyre.

An anthology series, season 2 is going to have a lot of hype to live up to and will star Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughan and Rachel McAdams.
