The mythology of The X Files was elevated to new heights in the season two finale, building on the twists and turns of Scully's abduction, the brief return of Mulder's sister and the colonisation arc. Mulder was closer to the truth, discover a box car full of alien corpses while Scully uncovered secret government documents which shed light on her own abduction. But it would end in a shocking cliffhanger - the greatest in the show's history - as the Cigarette Smoking Man closed in on Mulder's whereabouts and ordered the box car to be burned. With Mulder trapped inside, anticipation was raised as to how he would survive and whether the secrets he and Scully had uncovered would see the light of day. A gripping end to a phenomenal season, Anasazi was The X Files at its very best.
