20 Most Important TV Deaths This Decade

By Jack Pooley /

12. Debra Morgan - Dexter (Season 8, Episode 12)

The eighth and final season of Dexter was highly divisive among fans, particularly during its season finale, in which Dexter's foster sister Deb is unexpectedly killed. In the show's penultimate episode, she tries to apprehend series baddie Saxon, but he manages to shoot her and escape. In the final episode, Deb has successful surgery, though a blood clot causes a massive stroke, leaving her in a persistent vegetative state. With a hurricane approaching Miami, Dex removes Deb's life support and takes her out to his boat, where he gives her a burial at sea. The episode may have been entirely tainted by the whole "Dex is a lumberjack" conclusion, though there was a major uproar about Deb dying in such a strangely benign manner: she should have died a hero or probably not died at all. The death may not have been to all tastes, but it was certainly one of the most discussed and pivotal of the last decade in TV.
