10. It Took Just 4 Takes To Get The 6-Minute Tracking Shot Right
In order to create an atmosphere of dread and suspense, director Cary Fukunaga decided he wanted an extended tracking shot at the end of episode four, in the scene where Cohle undercover as Crash goes on an ill-fated raid with Ginger and his biker gang. The moment shows off a feat of filmmaking thats already become legendary in the realm of television, and though Fukunaga would get the shot right by just take four, it was never going to be easy. We required the involvement of every single department, like a live theatre show, said Fukunaga. We had make-up artists hiding in houses so they could dash out and put make-up on Ginger's head... we had stunt guys coordinating with stunt drivers to pull up at the right time, special-effects guys outside throwing foam bricks and firing live rounds.
