14. Matthew McConaughey Was Originally Offered The Role Of Hart
Though he won an Oscar for playing AIDS campaigner Ron Woodroof in Dallas Buyers Club while True Detective was first airing, Matthew McConaughey arguably gave his best ever performance as Rust Cohle. But he originally wasnt even slated to play the part at all. Noting a similarity between Hart and some of his past characters (Pizzolatto and Fukunaga wanted McConaughey based on his work in The Lincoln Lawyer), McConaughey wanted to take a different path for this role and play the nihilistic Rust instead. It was then McConaughey who suggested Woody Harrelson, his long-time friend whom hed worked with twice before, to play opposite him as Hart.
