16. The Crew As Robin Hood's Merry Men From Qpid (1991)
Do British viewers have more trouble with this than American ones? Putting actors in really bad Renaissance fair costumes and having them speak in really bad British accents (thank you, LeVar) is something Americans tend not to notice since they see so much of it. That, and it's not their cultural heritage being exploited for cheap laughs. It's not just the idea of pillaging the Robin Hood mythos just for the hell of it that's so cringey - in less than a month, we'll be seeing the new series of Doctor Who do exactly that. It's how badly TNG does it, and all so that Q can somehow push Picard and Vash together. Ugh. Worf's line 'I protest! I am not a merry man!' is worthwhile, but the rest... not so much. From Troi once again proving she's useless by making Data into a pincushion to Q taking a bizarre interest in Vash, this episode is a whole bucketful of cringe served up with a slice of beef. And while we're on the subject... Picard is French. The word for 'cow' in French is 'vache,' which sounds exactly like 'Vash'. Picard's girlfriend is named 'Cow'. Seriously, did no one on the production staff ever think these things through?!
