5 Reasons Why Channel 4 Is Superior To The BBC And ITV (And 2 Reasons Why It Isn't)

By Alex Antliff /

1. Its Lack Of Original Drama

This, ultimately, is where the BBC and ITV will always be king, barring exceptional future circumstances. ITV, despite its many flaws, is home to the likes of Foyle€™s War, the worldwide sensation Downton Abbey and the currently airing Broadchurch, whilst the BBC has been responsible for a significant number of the greatest shows of all time, ranging from miniseries such as Edge Of Darkness and State Of Play and serials such as Doctor Who to critically acclaimed recent commissions such as Sherlock and Life On Mars. That€™s not to say that Channel 4 doesn€™t air any great drama at all €“ both Skins and Shameless, though not my personal cup of tea, attracted viewers in their droves for their respective portrayals of contemporary teenage and working class life, whilst shows such as Misfits, Queer As Folk and Top Boy are all highly watchable as well. Meanwhile, Black Mirror, an anthology show that features a different cast and story in each episode in the vein of the Twilight Zone, has been a revelation, and signals that Channel 4 can be a home for great drama, though they€™ll have to commission much, much more of it to be comparable to the BBC in that regard. And there you have what I feel is a well-rounded insight in the world of British terrestrial television. Your views on the matter are always appreciated, however, so feel free to share them in the comments section.
