If you haven't already seen Modern Family, then you're missing probably the sitcom on TV at the moment. While others such as 2 Broke Girl" and The Big Bang Theory dominate the ratings, Modern Family has decent ratings but also great critical reception. 2 Broke Girls has been criticized heavily in the past for it's overly racist and sexual jokes, and The Big Bang Theory, while acclaimed, does garner a lot of negative reception due its annoying live audience, decline in quality and becoming too much like other sitcoms such as Friends. Back onto Modern Family, the show is genius. Currently in it's 4th season, the show is still producing hilarious episode after hilarious episode, with no sign of letting up. Everything on it works, from the characters to the humour the show is just a delight to watch. It's also very "feel good", with rarely any insult humour - most of the jokes comes from clever writing and witty retorts. Created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the series first aired on September 23, 2009 and has since become a massive critical success; even Ellen Degeneres cites it as one of her favourite shows, as have Ann Romney and Michelle Obama. Now onto the reasons why you should watch it...
5. Characters
The series boasts an excellent cast of characters, with 10 primary characters for the first two seasons it's now up to 11 (no Spinal Tap pun intended) with the baby Lilly now growing up. Why the show works for me, is that all of the characters are brilliant, whether it's the goofy but competitive Phil (Ty Burrell), the over-the-top but hilarious Gloria (Sofia Vergara), or the bubbly and dramatic Cam (Eric Stonestreet); the entire cast just keeps churning out funny lines over and over again. The kids are also very good on the show, which is great to see as a lot of kids tend to be a bit "bratty". Alex and Haley's constant bickering is always comedy gold, Luke's stupid but loveable personality is awesome to watch; mix that with Manny's over-confidence and Lilly's wise cracking mouth and you've got one hell of a stellar line up. Also you have Jay, Claire and Mitchell, who are always delightful to see on screen. To sum up, the characters carry the show; over the years the show has had great guest stars from Elizabeth Banks to David Cross, to the always funny Fred Willard but the primary cast are the reason I watched and continue to watch the show. They are just so hilarious together on screen.
