6 Criminally Underrated Monty Python Sketches

4. Restaurant Sketch

There is something always funny in finding something banal and ramping it up so it becomes a massive deal. The Restaurant Sketch (otherwise known as the Dirty Fork Sketch) does just that, pushing all sorts of normal social conventions out the window as a tragedy of almost Ancient Greek proportions occurs over a stained piece of cutlery. Much of the reason this sketch is so funny is the way that it almost seems a natural progression while only getting truly weird at the end. The whole ensemble are brilliant, with John Cleese as the maniacal chef and Michael Palin's emcee particularly good viewing. And if that doesn't convince you, just wait for that punchline.
