Everyone in and around the research station down on the planet had been infected. The Federation scientists had been working on a new food source for the colonies. Now, it was they (and a few Klingons) who were looking to feed.

'Want of a better word' won't help you either when you're being eaten alive. The episode does not hold back when it comes to blood and guts.
